Meet our skillscymru presenters!

Congratulations to the two winners of our skillscymru ‘be the presenter’ competition!

            
 
Sam Ebenezer from Aberystwyth won in the 14-19 category, whilst Michelle Owen from Powys took the top spot in the over 20s category.

We were really impressed with the high standard of entries received – well done to all competitors for producing such excellent work and making this a closely fought competition.

For those of you who are coming along to skillscymru, look out for Sam and Michelle in action at the big event! If you cannot attend skillscymru in person, you can still participate virtually and will be able to ask questions and watch videos online. Find out more here.

Finalists of CLIC Battle of the Bands announced!

 
The five finalists of the CLIC Battle of the Bands 2010 have been announced! They are:

Who do you think should win? All finalists will now compete for the top spot at the grand final - which is being held as part of skillscymru on Saturday 18 September at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.

A team of judges will choose the overall winner who will play out the final set on the main stage in the stadium at 3.30pm.

What does it take to be a successful competitor?

How can skills competitions open doors to your future? Come along to skillscymru and listen to Gareth Evans and Cliff Williams talk about their experience. As former WorldSkills UK competitors, both are more than qualified to provide top tips to help you achieve success in your chosen field. This session starts at the skillscymru theatre at 11.45am on Friday 17 September at the Millennium Stadium.

Gareth and Cliff have been extensively involved in WorldSkills UK competitions over the past couple of years. Both competed in a number of carpentry competitions, culminating in a place on the WorldSkills UK Squad for Gareth, whilst Cliff went on to compete for Team UK at the last international WorldSkills competition, WorldSkills Calgary 2009. So, they have plenty of advice to offer on what it takes to compete with the best in your field!

Both Gareth and Cliff have put their skills to good use in starting up and developing their own businesses. Gareth has also been appointed as Skills Competition Co-ordinator for Coleg Sir Gâr’s carpentry section where he is turning his career towards teaching.

skillscymru aims to smash a Guinness World Record

At 11.45am on Saturday 18 September, a crowd will have gathered centre stage inside the Millennium Stadium Cardiff. This is when skillscymru will host its ‘Biggest Welsh Language Challenge’ and an attempt to set and break a Guinness World Record for the World’s Biggest Language Lesson!

The idea is to showcase how learning a new language is fun and a great skill; with Welsh language skills in particular, proven to be a massive advantage for those who live, learn and work in Wales.

If you are a complete beginner or have very little knowledge of the Welsh language, this is a fantastic opportunity to take part in an exciting event and improve your skills.

The lesson will last around 15 minutes and if you’re feeling inspired afterwards, you can visit the ‘Bilingual Wales Cymru Ddwyieithog’ stand to find out how your Welsh language skills could benefit you in your chosen career.

Tell all of your colleagues, friends and family about this challenge and get involved in this record breaking attempt!

Stop Press: Be the presenter deadline extended!

 
Good news! If you still haven’t managed to submit your video for this skillscymru competition the deadline has been extended to 30 August 2010.

What’s more – we’re going to be at the Eisteddfod next week with a roving cameraman on the hunt for potential presenting stars! So, on Wednesday 4 August, come along and try your hand at presenting a short piece to camera. If you’re happy with your clip, you can upload it later to YouTube as your official entry.

On 4 August, we’ll also be at stand S216 between 9am and 11.30am where you can watch beauty therapy and carpentry demonstrations up close, as well as finding out more about the big skillscymru event. See you there!
